About the 2021 Volvo XC40
The 2021 Volvo XC40 sets the standard for a compact SUV, highlighted by a striking design, advanced safety innovations, and cutting-edge technology. The XC40 arrived in the US as one of the safest, well-equipped compact SUVs available on the market thanks to award-winning technology already found on the XC90 and XC60 models. With the addition of the XC40, the Volvo SUV lineup now features three of the newest vehicles in each of their respective segments. The larger 7-Passenger XC90 remains the most awarded SUV of the century while the mid-sized XC60 remains Volvo's most popular SUV.
Providing the foundation for upcoming vehicles in the Volvo 40 series, the new XC40 is the first model on Volvo Cars' new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform. XC40 shoppers will have their selection of a standard T4 powertrain featuring an efficient turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 187 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque with front-wheel drive. Searching for more power? Step up to the T5 powertrain and you'll enjoy a more potent turbocharged four-cylinder with 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque along with a capable all-wheel drive system. Each of these powertrains comes paired to a responsive 8-speed Geartronic™ automatic transmission. No matter what your weekend agenda looks like, you'll be prepared to take on any challenge with the stylish XC40.
What the Critics Say
"Despite being the least expensive SUV in Volvo's lineup, cost-cutting measures are kept to a minimum. The XC40's large central touchscreen, digital instrument panel and floating air vents are nearly identical to Volvo's pricier offerings, while a robust set of driver aids keeps driver and passengers safe. In short, it's everything you would expect from a small Volvo." -- Edmunds
"The 5-seater XC40 has the right combination of looks, size, and features at a price within the reach of young, affluent buyers. Its broad range of models, generous standard equipment, long list of sophisticated options, and punchy 2.0-liter turbocharged engine make the 2021 XC40 a superb choice." -- Kelley Blue Book
What's New for 2021
For the 2021 model year, the Volvo XC40 returns with an even longer list of standard features to help it remain the most compelling choice in the compact luxury SUV segment. Examples of newly-standard amenities include blind-spot monitoring, rear-cross-traffic alert, leather seating surfaces, adaptive LED headlights, power-folding exterior mirrors with auto-dimming, rear parking sensors, and two rear-seat USB-C ports. Last year's optional adaptive suspension system has been discontinued for the 2021 model year. Finally, a cargo-area 12-volt power outlet and heated windshield wiper blades are now found in option packages.
